“The Book of Nahum”


BIBLE READING: Nahum 1-3
DISCUSSION                                     
                The small book of Nahum is a collection of visions that the prophet has concerning the downfall of the Assyrians.  However, the book is not entirely about the fall of the Assyrians, but He rather uses them as an example to show us that God will always punish those nations that prey on and persecute the innocent.  This is good news for God’s people of the day, because He also lets His people know that He will punish the wicked but offer refuge for the faithful.  “The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him” (Nahum 1.7).  The message of the book is also good news for us.  It reminds us that God is still sovereign over all the nations of the world, and He will “by no means clear the guilty” (Nahum 1.3).  The lesson for us is that if God will always punish the wicked for their deeds, He will also provide a shelter for those that humble themselves before Him.  It wasn’t just the Assyrians that were going to be punished for their treatment of the innocent, it was the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Nazis and yes, ISIS.  This book serves as an example that God will always punish the wicked but bless the humble.

BIBLE READING : Job 3. 1-26 “I wish I had never been born,” Job said to his friends. “I wish that my birthday was just wiped off of the calendar as though it never happened.” Who could blame him? The loss that he had endured in mere moments had been catastrophic. Job had experienced a wonderful life until that day, when all he had known changed. I know that many people have endured tragic losses, but Job’s defeat seems unfathomable. Isn’t it ironic that, although Job’s comments brought him so much pain, they can bring us so much joy?
