"Praising God For Our Blessings"
BIBLE
READING: 2 Samuel 7, 1 Chronicles 17
Almost
every morning you can stop by McDonalds in Killen to find a group of older
gentlemen that are enjoying their coffee, solving the world’s problems and
bragging on their kids and grandkids.
You can almost hear them, “My son was just promoted to President of his
company.” “Really my grandson is fighting for our country in Afghanistan.” Well, my son has just finished up his PHD and
is opening up his own practice.” It is
natural for us to want to brag on our children and grandchildren for all of
their accomplishments; after all, they make us proud. That is the way David must have felt in
today’s passage as he hears the words of Nathan the prophet concerning David’s
future offspring.
“When your days are fulfilled to walk
with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own
sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for me, and I
will establish his throne forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be
to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him
who was before you, but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom
forever, and his throne shall be established forever.'" (1 Chronicles
17:11-14)
David’s
son would be the one that would build the house of the LORD! I can just imagine how proud David must have
been and how he wanted to tell everyone the news that he had received. However, the first thing David did was praise
God. If you notice the next portion of
Scripture, it reveals to us the heart of a humble king David as he bows in
prayer before the God of the Universe and praises Him. There is a lesson in that! In this world when tragedy hits, or things
don’t work out the way we have planned, we are very quick to criticize God and
ask Him why things are happening the way they do. Yet when good things happen, and we are
blessed, we often feel that we are somewhat responsible and we forget to thank
God and praise Him for the good news.
May David’s prayer be a lesson to us that when great and exciting things
happen for us, the first thing we should do is bow down and thank God and
praise Him for the good that He has shown to us.
