"He Satisfies"
BIBLE
READING: Psalm 106-107
As Jesus
preaches, what we refer to as the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7, there has
always been a part within the beatitude section that intrigued me. As a child, when I would read aloud the
Beatitudes, I was never able to quite understand what it meant to be “pure in
heart” or “merciful” and I certainly did not understand what it meant to be
“poor in spirit”. However, there was one
that I was able to wrap my tiny little head around; “Blessed are those who
hunger and thirst after righteousness” (Matthew 5.6). I have always had an innate desire to be
hungry and thirsty, now I had never tried this snack called “righteousness” but
I assumed it must be good. I always
thought it must be like that other snack they had in the Bible, you know
Manna. The Bible describes “manna”
tasting like wafers that had been made with honey. I always wondered why “Little Debbie” had
never tried to market a snack like manna. God would send manna to the children
of Israel while they were on their way to the Promise Land. We can see how when they got hungry, God
would give them food. When they were
thirsty, God would send them water. God
always provided for them. Today, as
examined in the daily reading, David is recounting (in songs) the Israelites
journey to the Promise Land.
Specifically, in Psalm 107.9, “He has satisfied the thirsty soul, and
the hungry He has filled with what is good”.
If God was able to satisfy the Israelites when they hungered and
thirsted with something good, then when I hunger and thirst for something good
He will satisfy me as well. In fact,
that is exactly what Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after
righteousness (what is good), for they shall be filled (Matthew 5.6).
