“What Are You Asking God For?”
BIBLE READING: 2 Chronicles 1-4
What if God
gave you the opportunity to ask for anything in the world, what would it be?
Would you ask to be rich? Would you ask to be more attractive? Maybe you might
ask for God to give you special abilities? Sadly, for most of us our request
would be selfishly driven. Afterall, it is our request and not someone else’s.
Yet in the case of Solomon, he did not request any of those things. In fact,
his request was very unselfish in nature. When given the opportunity to ask God
for anything in 2 Chronicles 1.7-12, Solomon chose wisdom. Wisdom that would
help him govern the great people of God. Solomon knew that if he really wanted
to be successful in ruling God’s people, he was going to have to seek out God’s
guidance. Now, let me rephrase the introductory question, “What are you asking
from God?” Today because of Christ, we have an amazing opportunity to speak to
God whenever we want. We are even taught in Scripture to “Let your
request be known to God” (Philippians 4.6). What kind of requests are
we making known? We would all do well to ask God for things that not only could
benefit us, but that
could also benefit those around us. The Apostle Paul also tells us that we need
to “…look not only to his own interests, but
also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:44). We may not be blessed with wealth and riches like Solomon,
but we are promised that He will give us what we need. We would do well to
consider others as we make our requests known to Him.
