Be Strong

 

                                                               

 Most everybody in this area knows the name T.B. Larimore. He and his wife, Esther Gresham, settled in the Mars Hill community in 1870. T.B. Larimore would found the Mars Hill Academy in 1871 and would later become Mars Hill Bible School that many of our students attend today. Larimore is most well known for his preaching and work during the restoration movement. We are very blessed to be benefactors of this movement by just living in the Florence area. I am in love with the “old days” and love to read and study about the history or this area. I try myself to be as old school as           possible. I’m afraid that in religious circles, old school, isn’t very popular. Old hymns aren’t favorites, old fashioned preaching isn’t popular, and attending church services isn’t emphasized like it used to be. T. B. Larimore, I like many who have come before us, could be described as old school. He believed in hard work. He believed in studying the scriptures. He believed in “all” preaching the gospel  to “all”. These ideas are always fashionable today, but if we could adapt some of these old paths into our lives, it could really benefit us. I came across this excerpt from  Life, Letters, and Sermons of T. B.    Larimore. I hope this “old school” message encourages you and the end of great week.

"Wanted, today: Men and women, young and old, who will obey their convictions of truth and duty at the cost of fame, fortune, friends and life itself." BE STRONG.

 Be strong! We are not here to play, to drum, to drift. We have hard work to do, and loads to lift. Shun not the struggle, face it,'tis God's gift.

 Be strong! Say not the days are evil; who's to blame! And fold thy hands and acquiesce. O, shame! Stand up, speak out, and bravely, in God's name.

Be strong! It matters not how deep entrenched the wrong, How hard the battle goes, the dry how long; Faint not! fight on! tomorrow come, the song.

The Colors of Christmas: Green

  Discussion:                                    Evergreen plants, like holly and mistletoe have been used for thousands of years to decorate and brighten up buildings during the long dark winter. They also reminded people that spring would come and winter wouldn't last forever! The Romans would exchange evergreen branches during January as a sign of good luck. The ancient Egyptians used to bring palm branches into their houses during the mid-winter festivals. In many parts of Europe during the Middle Ages, “paradise plays” were performed, often on Christmas Eve. “Is there Joy in your Heart?”

  DISCUSSION:                              There are so many things going on in this world today that it is easy to let worry have more room in our heart than happiness. In the medical world, we are constantly being reminded of the preventive medicine we need. Unlike 60 years ago when health only entered our minds when we got sick, today we are told continually of so much that can happen to our health if we don’t have this test run, take this pill, or get this shot to prevent some type of virus infecting us. If you allow it, you can give this too much attention. Of course, it is important to have good health. As we get older it really seems to get a lot more of our attention. Don’t let worry about your health take your eyes off the cross.
