Be A Champion

 


One definition for the word champion is: a person who has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a          competition. I think a more basic definition might be “winner”. If you are a champion, then that would imply that you won. This word is most associated with sports and athletes. I won’t even begin to         illustrate this point with a specific team or individual because we all think of different examples when we think of champions. But, it’s definitely something to ponder for a moment. Who do you think of? What made them champions?

Being a champion in athletics or some other area on this earth is obviously an awesome thing, but what is an absolute truth about these championships? They’re temporary. Sure people may remember     championships form a hundred years ago, but one thing is for certain,  they won’t be here forever.     Going back to our definition form the opening, is there a victory/ championship that will last forever? Absolutely, for those who have been obedient to the Gospels of God’s Son, Jesus, and his divine word, scripture says there is a crown that is imperishable. It says there is an inheritance that is unfading and lasts forever. A championship that is “Forever”. This is a championship we should all be going after! In Heaven, we will truly be able to say that we are “Champions”!

Application: Take some time to discuss the efforts we make to win earthy championships. Do they outweigh the efforts we make to gain the eternal championship of Heaven?

  Discussion:                                    Evergreen plants, like holly and mistletoe have been used for thousands of years to decorate and brighten up buildings during the long dark winter. They also reminded people that spring would come and winter wouldn't last forever! The Romans would exchange evergreen branches during January as a sign of good luck. “Is there Joy in your Heart?”

  DISCUSSION:                              There are so many things going on in this world today that it is easy to let worry have more room in our heart than happiness. In the medical world, we are constantly being reminded of the preventive medicine we need. Unlike 60 years ago when health only entered our minds when we got sick, today we are told continually of so much that can happen to our health if we don’t have this test run, take this pill, or get this shot to prevent some type of virus infecting us.
