“Grace”

BIBLE READING: Galatians 1-3

"For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise." - Galatians 3:18

Elizabeth Keckley was a slave in Missouri before the Civil War. Her greatest desire was to purchase freedom for herself and her son. Her owner agreed that if she could raise $1,200 she could gain her freedom. Elizabeth worked as a seamstress and came up with a plan to go to New York City and work there to raise the money, but her owner feared that she would not return.

Instead, one of her wealthy clients in St. Louis, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Le Bourgeois, contributed the money she needed. Lizzie said: “It would be a shame to allow you to go North to beg for what we should give you.”

Elizabeth was able to pay the price for her freedom as well as her son’s. She moved to Washington, DC, where she counted Mary Lincoln among her dressmaking clients. But without Lizzie’s graceful gift, Elizabeth would never have been able to purchase her freedom on her own.

We are all enslaved to sin. But with God’s grace, we can be free. Today in prayer, thank Jesus for His death on the Cross. Thank Him that He is with you and continually gives grace to you.

"No one is safe by his own strength, but he is safe by the grace and mercy of God." - Cyprian
