“Whom Shall I Send?”

BIBLE READING: Isaiah 4-6

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.
The story may be confusing, but the message is clear; no one took responsibility so nothing got accomplished.  Sadly, this story becomes the norm in many of our churches.  So many people expect someone else to do the job that anybody could do, but in the end, nobody really does it.  That was certainly not the case with Isaiah the prophet.  When he heard the voice of the LORD say, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”; there doesn’t seem to be any hesitation in his voice, as he quickly volunteers.  Did Isaiah fully understand the task God had for him to do?  I seriously doubt it.  In fact, I wonder if he had any real inclination of all that God expected of him at all.  Yet, Isaiah was still willing to volunteer his services to do whatever it was that the LORD needed.  We need more people like Isaiah in our churches.   There are so many things that need to be done and so much more we could be doing if we just had more people willing to volunteer to do them.  This week…make an extra effort to volunteer your time somewhere in the service of the Lord; you will be glad you did.                                                                                                                                                                         -MH
