“Warnings”
BIBLE READING:
Proverbs
4-7
In
these chapters, we are warned against adultery and other folly. Choices made
because of lust are warned against. In chapter 5:3, Solomon warns “For the lips
of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, but in
the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.” In verse 7-8 he
gives advice as how to avoid this temptation. “
..do not depart from the words
of my mouth. Keep your way from her, and do not go near
the door of her house, lest you give your honor to others.” He also stresses
the importance of faithfulness in marriage. In verse 18 he states, “…rejoice in
the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe….be intoxicated always in
her love.”
In
chapter 6:1-11, Solomon stresses the dangers of laziness, and in 6:12-19, the
characteristics of the villain. In chapter 7:21, he continues with this
warning. “With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk
she compels him. All at once he follows her as on ox goes to the slaughter, or
as a stag is caught fast till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into
a snare, he does not know that it will cost
him his life.”
