“Rated M, for Mature Audiences”
BIBLE READING:
1Kings
16-18
Although things were not perfect
in Judah, at least they had some stability with Asa reigning 41 years. The kingdom of Israel did not experience the
same stability. In fact, it sounded more
like a cable series that was rated M for Mature audiences only. King Baasha killed Nadab and then turned and
had all the descendants of Jeroboam slaughtered. Then when Elah was king, he got himself drunk
in the house of Arza and was killed by Zimri.
Then as if this murder of Elah only whet Zimri’s appetite for blood, he
killed off Baasha’s whole family. Zimri’s
reign was not very long at all, only seven days. Yet within that week Zimri, became so afraid
of Omri the commander of the army, he burned down the palace with himself in
it, making Omri king. Pretty crazy
huh? I told you it was rated M for
Mature audiences only. So, what does all this have to do with today’s
devotional? Even during this entire
gruesome process, God is still in charge. It could be that God is wanting us to
see how our own evil practices will bring about His judgement upon us. All the while God’s people are still serving
Him, still following His commands, if only behind the scenes. When we watch the news today, there still
seems to be a great deal of evil going on in the world. It may not be with our President or kings of
other nations, yet it still exists all throughout the world. If God’s people can still serve and worship
Him amid all these evil practices, don’t you think He can still work through us
today? God is always working, even in
the midst of evil…He is still working!
