BIBLE READING: Acts 3. 1-8
DISCUSSION:

I wonder who saw him first, Peter or John, as they went up to the temple to pray? He was being carried along by some do gooders, getting ready to sit him down at the gate. He was lame and had been since birth. They did this every day to give him an opportunity to beg for some gifts or donations as people left the temple. When he saw Peter and John he asked them the same question he had probably asked a million times before. He had no idea that his life was about to change forever. “I don’t have any money” Peter said, “but what I do have I give to you: IN the name of Jesus Christ the Nazerene- walk!” (Acts 3.6) Are you serious? He must have thought, because it looks as though Peter has to grab his arm to lift him up. As Peter pulled him, he felt a bit of strength begin to grow within his feet an then his ankles; and then it happened, he jumped! He gained his composure, stood upright, and walked right into the temple praising God. This man had been hurting. No telling how long he had been doing the same old things, relying on the generosity of others. This man was seeking. Although he wasn’t looking for Jesus per se, he was looking for something. When people find Jesus they are not looking for Him. They are looking for happiness, peace, something to relieve their pain, a reason to live. This man came to know Jesus. Most people in this life are looking for something. They are reaching out, offering their cup to the world saying “please fill me, please sustain me, please satisfy me,” yet this world cannot do so; only He can. So as you go through your day, be more observant to those who are out there hurting, looking, asking, begging for your attention, and then offer them the only thing that can bring true fulfillment- Jesus!

Woodlawn Family Bible Study TUESDAY BIBLE READING:    Genesis 32:22-32 Do you want to be blessed? That sounds like a rhetorical question, doesn’t it? Who doesn’t want to be blessed? I guess it really depends on your definition of “blessed.” Many people desire blessings that will make them wealthy or, perhaps, material goods. However, being blessed is not limited to those physical things. In fact, sometimes we can be blessed in the most unusual ways. For instance, in Genesis 32:26, we find Jacob wrestling with what we often call an angel. Within the story, Jacob is overtaking the angel and holding him down; refusing to let go until the angel gives him a blessing. The angel obliges Jacob, but not in the way he might have imagined. BIBLE READING : Job 3. 1-26 “I wish I had never been born,” Job said to his friends. “I wish that my birthday was just wiped off of the calendar as though it never happened.” Who could blame him? The loss that he had endured in mere moments had been catastrophic. Job had experienced a wonderful life until that day, when all he had known changed. I know that many people have endured tragic losses, but Job’s defeat seems unfathomable. Isn’t it ironic that, although Job’s comments brought him so much pain, they can bring us so much joy? My mother always taught me that, no matter how bad I may think things are, someone else always is suffering more than I am. Not only does that help us to feel that we are not alone in our depression, but it gives us that hope for what is to come.
