“STAND FIRM, HOLD YOUR POSITION”

DISCUSSION

Have you ever been in a situation where you feel powerless?  It may be because of illness, tragedy or the actions of others against you. Whatever the case, you have no control over the situation.  In 2 Chronicles 20, that is the way Jehoshaphat feels.  The Moabites, Ammonites and Meunites have joined forces and are headed to attack the nation of Judah.  The Bible says that King Jehoshaphat is afraid because he knows that they are no match for this “horde” of an enemy.  He feels powerless; there is nothing he can do to stop them from coming.  The only thing he can do is prepare for the impact.  He calls assembly before the House of the LORD and cries out to God for help.  Although they ask for God’s deliverance, they are content to accept whatever fate that God has before them.  As the King closes out his prayer, he says something very significant:  “For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us.  We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You”.  Did you catch that?  “We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on You”.  Even when we feel powerless, we still have an all-powerful God that is behind us.  As the story goes, while in the assembly the Spirit of the Lord comes upon Jahaziel.  He reveals to them the words of the LORD and assures them that all will be ok, all they must do is “Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf” (2 Chronicles 20.17).  Even when we think there is nothing we can do, we can still do something.  When we turn to God and seek Him with all we have, we can trust (and wait, if need be) knowing that He loves us and will be there to help us through our circumstances.  Now that doesn’t mean that He will deliver us from the disease, or tragedy or harsh treatment of others; but it does mean that He is with us and will help us through it.  It is a comfort in knowing we don’t have to do this alone.
