“Don’t Be Lazy!”
If you’re an Andy Griffith Show fan, you may
remember Asa Breeney. Asa was the
security guard at the local bank. If you
remember Asa, you remember what his demeanor was like. Every time Andy or Barney would go inside at
the bank, Asa was in the corner, asleep on his chair, just snoring away. This wasn’t an occasional thing. He was snoring in the corner on his chair all
the time! In one of the episodes, the
bank is being robbed, and Asa needs to take out his revolver to confront the
bank robbers. The only problem is that
as soon as he draws his gun, it falls into pieces on the floor of the bank
because it was old and rusty and had not been taken care of for a long
time. Asa had become very lazy about his
responsibilities and taking care of his gun to make sure he could do his job
right.
We all like to be lazy from time
to time. We all have that chair or spot
on the couch at home where we like to sit, lie down, or snore at the end of a
long day, or on a weekend afternoon. You
may even be sitting there right this very moment. If we weren’t meant to take breaks, then God
wouldn’t have set the precedent by resting on the seventh day of the Creation
week. It’s when it becomes too much of a
way of life and begins to dominate how we do things that laziness becomes a
problem. Proverbs 24:30-31 discusses the
field of the lazy man and how it becomes overgrown with thorns. Asa’s gun became that way because he
neglected it. Our life can become that
way out of neglect. Are we being too
lazy and neglecting certain things in our life?
James 4:17 says, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do
it, to him it is sin.” Is there
something that you know you should be doing but you’re not doing it? Think about that statement in James. It should really hit home.
In Proverbs 6, we’re instructed
to look to the ant for an example (vs 6-11).
All ants in a colony know that they all must work and do their part or
none of them will survive. God created
us this way, too, as humans, and as Christians.
Reflect upon what needs to be done in your life, and go do it. Reflect upon what needs to be done in the
Lord’s church, and go do it. It takes
all of us, and not a single one of us being lazy.
