Humility Test
James 4:6 says, "God
opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (ESV). God recognized
the humble, and according to James, will extend grace to them, probably because
the humble tend to extend forgiveness to others. Humility is often
misunderstood and even viewed as a weakness. But it is the exact opposite. By
practicing humility, we position ourselves to receive God's grace and become
everything He's called us to be.
Humble people are the happiest people. They accept their life and what
God has called them to do, not being concerned what the world thinks about it.
Our importance exists because God loves and values us. Our worth comes from the
fact that Jesus died for us and paid a dear price. I challenge you to
read the lyrics of the song, "Who Am I?" So many of us live a
life of misery because we constantly compare ourselves to others who we
perceive to be more attractive, more intelligent, and more
successful.
Dr Joyce Meyer published some great questions we can ask ourselves to
measure our level of humility. I have paraphrased them below:
1. Do we ask for help when we need it?
2. Are we quick to forgive others, difficult to offend, and content to
wait on God for vindication when we have been wronged?
3. Are we patient and avoid getting frustrated with the weaknesses of
others (Galatians 6:2).
4. Do we promote peace?
5. Are we quiet at times and allow others to shine?
6. Do we see our own weaknesses instead of bringing up the weaknesses of
others?
7. Do we happily serve other people not expecting it in return,
realizing that the reward will come from God?
8. Are we thankful? When we live with an attitude of gratitude, it
releases joy and power into our lives.
9. Are we quick to repent when we fail?
10. Do we treat everyone with respect, without regard to their social
status and their benefit to our agenda?
First Peter 5:6 says, "Therefore humble yourselves [demote, lower
yourselves in your own estimation] under the mighty hand of God, that in due
time He may exalt you."
The older I get, the more I realize the importance of humility.
Application: Carefully read the 10 questions above and examine yourself
honestly on each one.
