“Ezekiel 21.26-27”
BIBLE READING: Ezekiel
20-21
This statement, “Remove the
turban and take off the crown,” is no doubt a reference to the removal from
Jerusalem of both the high priest’s turban, or miter, and the king’s crown, as
the nation was taken captive to Babylon. Even after the exile, when the Jews
returned to their land, neither position was ever fully restored, marking the
beginning of “the times of the Gentiles” that Jesus spoke of in Luke 21:24.
Here verse 27 goes on to tell us that these 2 offices will remain overthrown “until He comes whose right it
is” to take them up again. The H is
capitalized in “until He comes”
because this is a prophecy about Jesus Christ’s second coming, when He will
receive the crown, as King over all, and the turban, as High Priest.
Jesus
Christ’s return is the subject of 1,845 references in the Old Testament and 318
in the New Testament, making an astounding 1 out of every 30 verses about His
return. Obviously, the Holy Spirit considers the subject critical since He
dedicated 2,163 verses to it. We do look with great longing and eager anticipation
toward the day when He begins His reign, a reign that will be filled with
peace, joy, and fairness. The Apostle Paul wrote
“Finally,
there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to
all who have loved His appearing.” -2
Timothy 4.8 But until that day, “until
He comes,” we believers are to be about kingdom business, taking the Gospel to
every nation, tribe, and tongue (Rev. 7:9).
