“True Blessedness”

BIBLE READING: Luke 10-11, John 10. 22-42

After Jesus had cast the demon out of the mute, some of the people were suggesting that Jesus was using the power of Beelzebul (the prince of the demons) to cast them.  Noting the irrational thinking that suggested that idea, Jesus reminds them that a divided household would fall.  Noticing not only the power but the wisdom of Jesus, a woman from the crowd shouted, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!" (Luke 11:27). Although I am sure that Jesus appreciated her sentiment, His reply reveals to us where the true blessedness rests.  "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" (Luke 11:28).  The word “keep” was understood by those that heard it as “Keeping it guarded, preserved or obeyed”.  Yes, Mary was blessed to have been chosen to give birth and raise the Christ Child.  However, the truest blessing comes when we hear the good news of Jesus and obey it.
